Professor Dato' Asmah Haji Omar was a member of the academic staff of the Universiti Malaya from 1963 until her retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics in 2000. She is currently Professor in the Za'ba Chair of Malay Civilization and Director of the Institute of Malay Civilization at the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjong Malim. Widely published, her main research areas include aspects of Malay and related languages, especially those of Sabah and Sarawak; descriptions of Aslian languages, especially Kentakbong (Baling, Kedah) and Mah Meri (Sepang, Selangor); Sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics and historical linguistics of the Malay World. She has also headed the Research Team for two series of Jejak Bahasa, a joint television production between Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and TV3.
