Use of Chinese

Chong Siew Ling

The Chinese dialects spoken in Malaysia have become localized or 'Malaysianized', and are widely used by the Malaysian Chinese in numerous social contexts. While generally speakers still identify themselves in terms of their principal dialect, there is an increasing trend towards the use of Mandarin, to a large extent as a result of its use as a medium of instruction in the local education system. Speakers of the various dialects are in any case united by a common writing system. This has facilitated the publication of Chinese materials.
