Tamil poetry
Local Tamil poetry began to develop in the late 19th century, building on the ancient tradition of the subcontinent. It was only much later that local poets broke away from the more rigid traditional forms, a move which, at least at first, generated a certain amount of friction within the Tamil literary community. Over the years, a large corpus of work has been produced in both the traditional and new (free verse) forms, a result of the foresight and dedication of certain key individuals and organizations.
