Tamil fiction

Until 1945, local Tamil literature was mainly oral, comprising folk songs sung on the rubber estates where the majority of Tamils worked. Some written literature began to appear towards the end of the 19th century, although, until Independence, themes were generally drawn from the immigrant Tamils' homeland in India. Nevertheless, a truly Malaysian voice did emerge, and with strong support from the Tamil media, a thriving literary scene has developed.
