Short stories and poetry in English

Margaret Yong and Lim Chee Seng

Silverfish New Writing anthology series

In the 2000s, new authors' works have been collated in the Silverfish New Writing anthology series, as well as a collection of Malaysian women's writing, published by Silverfish Books.

Short stories in English by local writers did not appear until after Independence in 1957, somewhat later than poetry, the first collection of which appeared in 1950. The literary roots of both genres traverse a broad expanse of people, time and space. This is apparent from the sense of cultural heterogeneity in the works produced, with writers and poets, a number of whom are diasporic, drawn from all three of the larger Malaysian ethnic groups.
