Short stories in Malay
Several short story anthologies have been published, principally by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
The legacy of the oral tradition of short folklore tales was continued in written form with the modern short story, which first appeared in the 1920s with the rise of Malay newspapers. After the deprivations of World War II, new socio-political themes emerged. In the 1960s and 1970s yet more styles emerged, influenced by Western literary trends, although these distanced some readers. The genre revived in the 1980s and has subsequently continued to thrive.
