Languages of Sarawak
Between 30 and 40 languages are spoken in Sarawak, Malaysia's largest state. Of these, at least 25 are indigenous languages, most of which may be grouped into 9 sub-families, all belonging to the Austronesian family. Some are more closely related to languages spoken outside Sarawak than to those spoken within the state. Several organizations are engaged in researching this complex language scenario. Sarawak is also home to a large number of speakers of Chinese; and English continues to play an important role in some speech domains.
