Religious literature
So impressive was Shaykh Nur-al-Din's use of Malay in works such as Hidayat al-Iman bi Fadi al-Mannan that is has been suggested that he may have known the language prior to his arrival in Aceh.
The teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith were supplemented by tales of Prophet Muhammad and the other Islamic prophets, both orally and written, in the Hikayat, and less romantic kitab (holy book), formats. These works have been instrumental in advancing the understanding of Islam in the region. The Qur'an itself is not considered mere religious literature by Muslims, but rather as the direct word of God (kalimah).
