Regional varieties of Malay
Distribution of Malay dialects
Malaysia has at least 11 million first-language speakers of Malay, and a rich and diverse range of geographic dialects that developed historically as a result of both the physical landscape and socio-cultural diversity. These dialects often differ extensively, both in terms of phonology and, to a lesser extent, vocabulary. Nevertheless, and notwithstanding that speakers of some dialects may have strong regional accents, for the most part they remain intelligible to speakers of other dialects and standard Malay.
