Language in the print media

Faridah Ibrahim

From a single English-language paper in the early 19th century, the local print media industry has expanded to include widely circulated newspapers in all four of the most commonly used languages: Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil. Sections in other local languages also appear within some of their pages. An even larger range of magazines and books are produced, providing a variety of outlets for writers in several languages and styles. Content is largely controlled by self-censorship as a result of government licensing and strict sedition laws.
