Poetry in Chinese
The first verse of 'Qing Yun Ting' (the name of a Chinese temple in Melaka), by You Chuan.
As with mahua (Malaysian Chinese) fiction, mahua poetry was directly influenced by the May Fourth Movement in China. Early mahua poets imitated the style of China's famous poets; their content too reflected social life in China. In the 1950s and 1960s, poets from Hong Kong and China emigrated to Malaysia and contributed to mahua poetry. Contemporary Malaysian-born poets remain prolific.
