Poetry in Malay

From the 1930s, traditional, more regular, Malay poetic forms were gradually superseded by free verse ('sajak'), better suited to 20th-century demands of social protest, particularly independence from colonial rule and Japanese Occupation. Like short stories, poetry proved both a popular and effective medium in the widely read local newspapers and magazines. Since Independence, a wider range of works has emerged.
