Panji romances

The Panji romances are an extensive cycle of stories about a prince (Panji) and his elusive fiancée (Chandra Kirana). They originated in Java, where they were used in Wayang Topeng (Javanese masked theatre). In the Malay Peninsula, they were held in particularly high regard, having been passed down through the generations in a number of ways, including oral storytelling, shadow play, and written form (both prose and verse). With localization, the names of some of the characters have changed from the Hindu-influenced original.
