Malay myths and legends

Mohd Taib Osman

Malay culture is rich in myths and legends. Many predate the conversion of the Malays to Islam, no later than the 15th century, and some pre-existing cultural elements have been retained. Myths and legends continue to pervade Malay folklore and day-to-day life through the practice of folk traditions, such as the propitiation of evil spirits and curing rituals. They also serve to justify elements of Malay culture and society, such as the right of the Malay sultans to rule.
