Modern Malay drama

Solehah Ishak

Si Bongkok Tanjong Puteri

Sandiwara play Si Bongkok Tanjong Puteri ('The Hunchback of Tanjong Pueri') by Shaharom Hussain is absed on a traditional Malay folktale, and remains pupular.

Modern Malay drama developed only after World War II. Drawing from indigenous Malay theatre and Bangsawan, it differed in that it followed written scripts. Also influenced by Western theatre, modern Malay drama has progressed through a number of distinct phases: the Sandiwara, the realistic, the generally unsuccessful experimental period, the reaction to this in the 1980s, and eventually to a resurgence in the 1990s as a result of government funding.
