Malayic languages of Sarawak

James Collins

Notice

Notices often appear in several languages in Sarawak. Here, Malay is placed at the top, followed by English, Iban and Chinese.

Three identifiable Malayic languages are spoken in Sarawak. Of these, Iban and Malay are the most widely spoken languages, while Selakau is spoken only by a small minority. All three languages share a number of similarities, and Iban and Selakau in particular are further related to other Malayic languages spoken elsewhere in southwestern Borneo (West Kalimantan, Indonesia). Much research has been undertaken and published on the Iban language, with European linguistic interest stretching back to the mid-19th century.
