Hikayat Hang Tuah

One of the foremost epics of the Malay World, Hikayat Hang Tuah is believed to have been first written down in the 17th century, recording earlier oral stories. It relates the personal history of the ideal Malay hero: from his early beginnings, through a number of courageous exploits, to his mysterious end. It also traces the parallel growth of the feudal Melakan empire which contributed to Hang Tuah's greatness.
