Early Malay novels

Zain Zawiyah

The eponymous war novel Zain Zawiyah, by Haji Ahamd Murad Nasaruddin, was published in the Roman (left) and Jawi (right) scripts.

The transition from the traditional Hikayat narratives, in lyrical and free prose, to the modern 'novel' form was influenced by Malay interaction with the Middle East, and facilitated by the increasing availability of printing technology and the introduction of secular education. Early authors were often teachers and journalists, who wrote and were initially published in the Jawi script. Themes were driven by political and economic developments, but also focused on social issues.
