Geographical distribution of the Chinese population

After China and Taiwan, Malaysia has the largest population of Chinese speakers in the world. The waves of Chinese migration into Malaysia from southern China from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries have created an incredibly complex pattern of distribution of the Chinese dialects. This is to some extent due to the economic pursuits undertaken by the different speech groups. Over the years, the dialects have evolved in Malaysia and become localized.
