Aslian languages

Geoffrey Benjamin

The Aslian languages, belonging to the Mon-Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic stock, have the longest association with the Malay Peninsula of any languages. Linguists adopted the label 'Aslian' in the mid-1970s when the mutual relationship between these languages was identified. The name was chosen because the languages are spoken by Orang Asli, the aboriginal or indigenous minority peoples of the Peninsula. Today, many of the Aslian languages are endangered. Some have already disappeared.
