Wayang Kulit Gedek, Melayu and Purwa

Wayang Kulit

Wayang Kulit Gedek is performed in Kedah and Perlis; Wayang Kulit Purwa in Johor; and Wayang Kulit Melayu in Kelantan.

Three other forms of shadow theatre performed in Malaysia are Wayang Kulit Gedek, Wayang Kulit Melayu and Wayang Kulit Purwa. Derived from either Thai or Java styles of shadow play, they have absorbed local cultural nuances and developed distinct styles. Wayang Kulit Gedek, in particular, is an eclectic blend of modernity and tradition. It has been remarkably reactive to changes in Malay society, and is a medium for social comment in villages. Performances of all three styles are on the decline.
