Teaching and research in the performing arts
Universiti Malaya regularly stages dance and drama performances by its students and those from their institutions and theatre groups.
Although traditional performing arts in Malaysia have a history centuries old, formal education in this field is a relatively new development, having started in the 1970s, and in only one institution of higher learning at the time. Since then, however, many universities have set up performing arts programmes, generating interest and research in both indigenous and modern theatre, dance and music.
