Storytelling and solo theatre

Ghulam-Sarwar Yousof

Tarik Selampit

The Tarik Selampit performer accompanies his storytelling with the hypnotic music of his lute (rebab). His art is strongly linked to mysticism.

The earliest and simplest form of theatre in Malaysia involved a single performer—an itinerant storyteller who travelled from village to village, reciting stories memorized from legends and ancient epics. This form of solo theatre, known as Awang Batil and Selampit in Perlis and Kedah, and Tarik Selampit in Kelantan, demonstrates the beauty, essence and power of a tale told in the traditional way.
