Social popular music

Tan Sooi Beng

Social popular music is said to have developed during the post-Portuguese period in 17th-century Malaya. Comprising syncretic Malay-language songs that often accompanied social dancing, this music took various forms known as Ronggeng, Dondang Sayang, Keroncong, Joget, Asli and Inang. The music fused Malay and Western elements and incorporated Indian, Middle Eastern and Chinese musical elements as well. Performances are held to entertain guests at social occasions such as weddings.
