Pantun

A pantun melody

Pantun and verse debates are call-and-response genres in which rhyming verses are composed extemporaneously between two individuals or two groups—one begins with a verse, usually made up of four lines, and the other responds with a corresponding verse. These forms of literary expressions are found in the various indigenous communities in the country. Among the Malays, pantun is by far the most popular literary expression, finding a place in many everyday situations, both formal and informal. It plays diverse functions, from entertainment and storytelling to the formalization of a marriage proposal and other social situations.
