Origins and history of performing arts in Malaysia

A foundation of indigenous performing art forms in Malaysia has been enriched by other forms that have either been totally imported, or have developed locally through inspiration from foreign cultures. The various forms of traditional theatre—indigenous arts, puppet theatre, dance theatre and opera—are further influenced by the diverse dance and music styles in Malaysia.

    Most Malay performing arts have folk origins. Others such as Terinai dance and music, Tari Asyik (above) and the Nobat orchestra, developed in the courts.
