Orang Asli music

Orang Asli

Orang Asli playing on a nose flute and a stick zither.

The Orang Asli maintain an intimate relationship with the natural environment and their music culture takes inspiration from this. Musical instruments are made from forest materials, while the music itself echoes sounds of the forest. Music is performed for pleasure or for ceremonial purposes rooted in animistic beliefs which revere the mountains, forests, seas and rivers.
