The Nobat is an instrumental ensemble and repertoire of music that exists in the ancient classical music tradition of Malaysia. Introduced from the Middle East not later than the 15th century, the Nobat took on a sacred aura as it came to support the validity and authority of the ruling class, especially the sultans. The instruments of the Nobat form a treasured part of the royal regalia in a number of states in Malaysia where they are played on both joyful and sorrowful occasions.
