Northern Malaysian folk music comprises music for puppet theatre and theatricals that feature human actors, such as Mak Yong, Mek Mulung and Jikey. In these forms the music and vocals have specific functions in the relating of a story. Each of these three forms of traditional theatre, found in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, has its own musical repertoire and ensemble. The musicians sit on floor mats along the periphery of the stage, while acting takes place at centre stage.
