Malay vocal music

Apart from existing as distinct art forms, Malay vocal music styles are manifested in some of the theatre genres found in Malaysia such as Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit and Main Puteri. These genres contain some of the most elaborate singing styles encountered in the country. Mak Yong in particular, with its melismatic songs, stands out as a unique form of Malay musical expression. The spread of Islam and its resurgence in the 20th century influenced performing art forms in Malaysia.
