Malay folk and social dances

Malay folk dance

Malay folk dance circa 1915-1920.

Malay folk and social dances in Malaysia are characterized by the syncretic nature of their repertoires, the result of fusion of foreign influences in dance movements and musical styles with home-grown creative elements. While these dance genres have kept to their original form and structure, improvisations in style and repertoire over the centuries also reflect a conscious process of adapting new ideas to enhance these dances to suit contemporary tastes.
