Ghulam-Sarwar Yousof

Kumpulan Seri Temenggung

A performance by Kumpulan Seri Temenggung. The group claims to have adopted the style of court Mak Yong performance developed during the time of Long Abdul Ghaffar.

The folk theatre of Mak Yong was briefly presented as court theatre early in the 20th century, when a Kelantan prince Long Abdul Ghaffar established Kampung Temenggung, a Kelantanese arts centre, in 1923. That effort to recreate the village art form as court dance theatre lasted 12 years. The legacy of courtly elegance and glamour was resurrected in 1971 with the creation of Kumpulan Seri Temenggung, which has become Malaysia's best-known Mak Yong troupe.
