Malay instrumental music

Patricia Matusky

Rebab

The rebab is a two- or three-stringed lute with an almost heart-shaped body made from wood of a jackfruit tree, and covered with a thin layer of skin taken from a cow's stomach.

The instrumental music originating among the Malays of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak is played by ensembles that are essentially percussive in nature. These ensembles incorporate instruments such as drums, bronze gongs, wood slabs and coconut shells. Some types of Malay instrumental music are found throughout the country; others are regional. The various kinds of music are performed for marriages and religious celebrations, at festivals, competitions and official events.
