Ghazal
Old handwritten song sheets of Ghazal compositions by Atan Ahmad in Arabic script (Jawi).
Ghazal, the art of reciting romantic and religious verses in a singing style, was brought to Malaysia from the Middle East in the early 20th century. Over the years, local music traditions have influenced its form and style, transforming it from a simple reciting musical genre to one with a unique Malaysian flavour. Two strains are found in the country, the more popular variation being in the southern state of Johor.
