Professor Dr Ghulam-Sarwar Yousof was invited to set up the performing arts programme, the first of its kind in the country, at the newly founded Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang in 1970. Attached to the Universiti Sains until his retirement, Professor Ghulam-Sarwar has also served as Visiting Professor at the University of the Philippines. He has done a great deal of pioneering work in traditional theatre genres such as mak yong, bangsawan and wayang kulit, and has published a dozen books as well as numerous monographs and research papers.
