Contemporary dance

Joseph Gonzales

Contemporary dance in Malaysia is a fusion of classical traditions and ethnic elements. Three generations have influenced this dance movement to its present state, best described as an evolving form with a vocabulary that strives to be uniquely Malaysian. Since the 1990s, choreographers have been integrating elements from various dance traditions while exploring creative movements and improvisation. The works are often stimulated by intercultural interaction and reflect the choreographers' interpretation of the Malaysian psyche.
