Chinese and Tamil drama

Soon Choon Mee and Raja Morgan Veerappan

Chinese and Tamil drama were brought to Malaysia in the early 20th century by immigrants—traders, merchants and indentured labourers. Both theatre forms initially adhered closely to, and were influenced by, cultural developments in their country of origin. They underwent almost similar phases of development in the years leading up to World War II, and in the post-Independence years paralleled the development of Malay and English drama in Malaysia, sharing themes influenced by historical and social circumstances, and incorporating elements from local as well as foreign cultures.
