Chinese opera, commonly known as Wayang Cina, was brought to Malaysia by Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century. It is performed in the Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien and Hainanese dialects. Staged as commercial entertainment or as ritual offering to the gods, it enjoyed popularity in the early 20th century, but has since lost out to more modern forms of entertainment. Since the 1990s, Chinese opera has been staged primarily for religious festivals rather than for entertainment. Like Chinese puppet theatre, Wayang Cina is urban-based.
