Passage to the South

Passage to the South, choreographed by Cheong Lin Poo.

Chinese dances were brought by immigrants in the mid-20th century and initially kept to the original form of folk and classical dance genres found in China. Since then Chinese dances in Malaysia have developed far beyond such replication, and while some of the original forms have been retained, local choreographers have incorporated elements from other ethnic, Asian and Western cultures into their techniques and repertoires, resulting in a vibrant dance movement that is contemporary in treatment and Malaysian in identity.
