Joget Gamelan

A 19th-century Joget Gamelan performance by Terengganu court dancers.

The dances and music known as Asyik and Joget Gamelan were nurtured in the classical tradition in Malay palace culture. These art forms were given patronage by the courts of the Malay sultanates in the past and served as entertainment for an educated elite in traditional society. Today they survive outside the palace and are developing under the guidance of government agencies, universities and other private institutions. Trained musicians and dancers perform the music and dance, while works are composed by individuals, sometimes with inspiration from the folk tradition.
