Contemporary art music
A performance featuring the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Petronas Performing Arts Group and Rhythm in Bronze.
By the mid-20th century many Malaysian musicians were well trained in the performance of Western and local instruments, and in the basic theory and elements of Western classical music. Composers of that era, such as Johari Salleh, Alfonso Soliano and Gus Steyn, played in the Radio Television Malaysia Orchestra, writing arrangements of pieces as well as original compositions. These early composers planted the seeds for a contemporary art music movement in Malaysia.
