Sarawak and Sabah

The present territorial boundaries of Sarawak and Sabah evolved gradually. During Brooke rule, Sarawak expanded northwards by acquiring territotry from the sultanate of Brunei. The state of Sabah (North Borneo) came into existence with the British North Borneo Company's acquisition and incorporation of territories on the north-west coast of Borneo from the sultanate of Brunei as well as territories on the east coast from the sultanate of Sulu.
