The new sultanate of Pahang

Dutch influence in Pahang, which had declined in 1795, came to an end in 1824 with the signing of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty, thus paving the way for the Bendahara of Pahang to consolidate his position. This process received a setback with the Pahang civil war of 1857-63, and it was not until 1884 that Bendahara Ahmad was declared sultan. However, the continuation of domestic turmoil eventually led to the appointment of a British Resident in 1888.
