The history of Malay newspapers and of Malay literature in the 19th and 20th centuries was intertwined. Both began with publications of Christian missionary organizations, followed by secular publications. During the l9th century, many publications were classics or translations of newspapers (from the local English-language versions) and literary works in other languages. It was not until the 20th century that the emphasis changed to original works, offen with an educational aim. Later, social and political criticism became more popular themes.
