James Brooke was an English adventurer who was rewarded with land and a title in return for helping to suppress a rebellion in Sarawak. He established a private colony under a dynasty of white rajahs which was to rule the state of Sarawak until World War II under an authoritarian system utilizing both indigenous chieftains and British district officers.
