Two early 20th-century guidebooks to the Federated Malay States.

The official establishment on 1 July 1896 of the Federated Malay States (FMS), comprising the four states of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, was the first step towards the present federal government system of Malaysia. The formation of the FMS was the direct result of the problems which the British faced after intervening in the administration of Pahang. Heading the federation was a Resident-General based at Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Selangor, which became the federal capital because of its central position.
