Dul Said and the Naning War

Barbara Watson Andaya

The Naning War

The Naning War was a battle between British and Dul Said, the penghulu of Naning, a semi-autonomous state, resulting from British attempts to collect tribute from the residents of Naning and to impose the laws of Melaka on the state. The war was eventually won by the British, but at very heavy financial cost.

The Naning War was an uprising resulting from unwelcome interference in the local customs of Naning, a small autonomous state adjacent to Melaka. Dul Said, a respected local chieftain, resented British attempts to rob himself and the local clan chiefs of their traditional authority and to impose Melaka's law and taxation systems in Naning. His refusal to submit to their authority angered the British, who launched a long and costly military battle against Dul Said.
