The British entrepôt of Singapore

Barbara Watson Andaya

The establishment of a British-controlled port on the small island of Singapore in 1819 was one of the most significant developments in the history of modern Malaysia. The Strait of Melaka had always been an international waterway and its importance was enhanced as Singapore, on the India-China trade route, became the region's new commercial hub. In addition to its economic importance, Singapore soon became an important centre for education and publishing.
