Antimony mining and the sago industry of Sarawak
Tramways were used to improved access to the antimony mines and to move the mineral from the mines to the smelter.
Antimony (a mineral) and sago flour (an agricultural product) were important export items in the economy of 19th-century Sarawak. After becoming rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke awarded the monopoly of both industries to himself. However, he later passed these monopolies to the Borneo Company, which he charged with the state's economic development. With the export of these two commodities, the state also acquired many of the basic characteristics of the present economy.
