Trawlers and traditional boats
The traditional Malay fishermen's lunch box (left) is intricately carved with plant motifs and Jawi calligraphy, translated as'This is a fisherman's lunch box'. The traditional tackle box (right), also carved with plant motifs and calligraphy, has compartments at each end for tackle.
There are many types of fishing vessels in Malaysia, ranging from large, well-equipped modern boats such as trawlers to smaller traditional craft such as sampans. The largest group of fishing vessels are the gill net boats which account for 54 per cent of licensed fishing vessels. Trawlers represent the second largest group, accounting for about 17 per cent. In order to separate commercial operators from traditional fishermen, and safeguard the livelihoods of traditional fishermen, fishing vessels in Malaysia are licensed under four categories (see 'Sustaining yields').
